Top seeed Mike Corren prevailed in the final of the 2011 Mackay Squash Open for the second year in a row. His
opponent, second seed, Rex Hedrick was a deserved finalist pushing Mike harder than any of his other opponents over the weekend.
Corren took the first two games with neither player giving away any cheap points. The hot conditions and consistent movement of both meant even the short rallies were over 20 shots. Hedrick took the third game and came very close to forcing a decider in the fourth. Corren was showing signs of fatigue in the final few rallies, but maintained his form and closed out the game 11-9. Hedrick’s final shot drew gasps of empathy from the crowd, a back wall boast that fell two inches short, landing on the top of the tin.
Melody Francis was pleased to get through a tough match, against fellow AIS player Tamika Saxby. Melody leaves today for Macau and Hong Kong.
